I have been a fan of yours since being a wee nipper growing up in Manchester.

I believe that the message conveyed by yr track “Power in the Darkness” is particularly relevant today.

These days I live in Oakland, part of the Bay Area (San Francisco, Berkeley, Oakland, San Jose etc). I have found that even here in this legendary bastion of “personal liberty” the focus of the counter culture seems to be largely internal and self oriented. ….Organic food, green computing, rebirthing, holistic medicine etc are the order of the day. Civil rights are practically taken for granted. A sense of entitlement is manifest. Nowhere is this more evident than in the post rave club culture where hedonism and materialism hold sway.

Accordingly my colleague JP Freely and I reworked yr track with the dance floor in mind. Our agenda – to seduce the “dancer”/night clubber with a dub disco reworking of yr track (based upon the incredible break beat that opens yr track courtesy of Dolphin)

…then to cause maximum confusion and consternation by way of mid track insertion of yr inflammatory “Freedom from the blacks and ….” Spiel”

Disorientation further accentuated by a vicious echo on the final “YOU” ….

Then finally to relieve the tension with a dubbed out second half to the track in tribute to the mid 80’s 12 inch format approach utilized by UB40 (Madame Medusa) SPECIALS (Stereotype) and so on.

The message is yours Tom. We just wanted to re-target it at a new audience. Not to mention to do something with that incredible breakbeat…….

I hope you enjoy this redux version of yr track as much as we did making it and playing it out for the local hordes. One small step in the “re-politicization” of the dance floor perhaps?
